No-Self - What Does it Really Mean?
First it might be helpful to describe selfing from this particular context, which can be grouped into multiple layers called fetters. There will eventually be a list of 10 fetters when I get time to add more content to this site and I will write about my experience of breaking each fetter.
Please bare in mind that my writing will sometimes come accross as academic, or techinical, or I’ll describe concepts that seem arcane. Some of the writing might even sound religous. My intention is not for you to develop another philosophical or religious framework, or debate abstract ideas; no!
With the fetters, it’s easy to get caught-up in trying to intelectually understand them as another field to navigate or a theory to entertain. The real work is done in your immediate experience, not through these steps.
Very simply, the fetter exploration asks: how many ways are you identified with experience, and can you find them all?
Although I have chopped up the process in fetter terminolgy, they are by no means perfect, and there are lots of other ways to break the process down, like Zen’s the Ten Bulls, or the Hero’s Journey. None of the stages from any other method have any real substance either, yet they recogize a journey of sorts that trancends how we as humans move through time, and fundamentally, how we relate to the world.
If we call it a journey, then it is a journey that is totally counter-intuitve to how people have been conditioned to understand reality. The quote by St John of the Cross comes to mind: ‘To come to the knowledge you have not, you must go by a way in which you know not. - so there lots of intellectual head fucks along the way, becouse, well… this is not an intellectual exercise in the slightest!
The word ‘fetter’ means ‘anchor’ or ‘constraint’. It’s the hideen assumption that drives identity.
So in the simplest terms, a fetter is a mental shackle or a psychological bond. It’s not a physical thing. A fetter is a powerful, unconscious pattern of mind that ties you to a limited self-perspective within the closed container of sensory experience.
As such, self-identity always follows the contours of separating the self-idea from the world. From this separation spawns an experiencer and simultaneously what they experience - they both arise together. The self belief is a product of the experiencer and the experience, and your inner world is given to you in two parts (subject/object, the knower and the known, or you here, and the world over there).
The strain is in the persistent need to keep these parts separated, (sometimes called suffering) which is simply what fetter inquiry is about: looking specifically into the various layers of straining that seem to tether an experiencer to an experience. One could say the strain is existence itself, or put more liberally: the particular way that human consciousness displays itself.
Therefore, you want to keep it seperated, and are actively encourage to do so by the collective, becouse if you don’t, your story of you will end and you see this as a terrible thing - but it’s absolutely not.
Once one has seen through their identity, (1st, 2nd & 3rd fetter) it becomes clear how much energy went into maintaining that dualistic strain. As a result, a huge amount of energy is liberated from that bound-up state, and it immediately rushes back into the body as vitality. But you have only scratched the very surface.
After things have settled down the the strain of the 4th & 5th fetter becomes rather obvious. All the unconscious patterns that were kept hidden by the self (fetter 1, 2 & 3) are revealed. That can be a very interesting and challenging period, and can cause all sorts of issues. It can even turn a person into a fundemantalist or a guru, or a non-dual speaker on youtube, so strong is the desire to be recognized in the world.
So, even after passing through the lower fetters, the fettering patterns themselves still continue, often appearing much stronger and can show up as intense pushing and pulling, fixations and fears. This can create a lot of doubt about your initial insight.
These often common and predictable chaotic patterns of behviour that are typical of awakening, are simply the next line of fetters to inquire into: fetter 4 & 5 - desires and aversions, but they have identity at their core, which are still the lower fetters (1, 2 & 3).
As you might gather, the subject, the object and the strain to maintain them both are entirely situated within the mind. It’s like there's something holding the subjective point and the objective point with both arms, like how you might pull (or push) two people towards you from opposite directions; that is the fetter.
With fetter work, the idea is to look directly at that thing that is pushing or pulling the tension of opposites, thereby creating an identity. Done correctly, what was once understood as a strain (fetter) is seen to be an assumption, meaning it’s not actually anything - and what a fuckin’ relief!
Not everyone moves through the fetters in perfect chronological order. Often the fetters are dynamic and alive, but for many as they go deeper, the lower fetters gradually dwindle into obscuraity until eventually they all dispappear. So for some people, the fetters overlap and trial behind for a while, and thats fine and actually perfectly normal in most cases..
Just to throw another spanner at your intelect: although there are 10 fetters, and I write (and speak) about them as if one moves incremenatally through time and thus their stages, (1 through 10) that is not actually the case. Awakening is totally counter-intuitive to how you were conditioned to understand reality. You don’t move through them, and there is no end destination. Once they are seen to not exist, as you recall old memories of you’re seeming struggle, you can see that they didn’t really exist there either.
So, this division of consciousness could be said to be an innocent misperception - that’s all.
As I look at my laptop, my attention suddenly appears at my head, yet nothing settles there. My attention did not move through space from the laptop to my head; no! First there was laptop, then there was head. All three occupy the same space (attention, laptop, head).
I now look at a chair in my room, and my mind does not apprehend the chair. It does not create the chair ‘out there’, and neither does it pull the chair inwards. The chair is just a very basic image. People are the same. One person has no more importance over another, becouse they are basically plain, simple images. Even to say they are very basic image is to say too much.
Although my head is an empty space, one could say it contains the chair, my laptop, the house, the nieghbourhood, the world, and that humungous galaxy we call the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16) about 7,000 light years away. It is not that I believe my mind is creating everything - that is an egoic solopsistic belief.
My head is by no means unique; I just have no conceptual boundaries (no fetters). Having no boundaries means everything appears without passing through time or space. Critically, this is not a personal declaration. I havn’t obtained a personal item, or a concept, or a special mind state; no!
It has absolutely nothing to do with any religion, non-dual teaching or spiritual path.
I did not gain a single ounce of spiritual truth - not even a sub-atomic particles worth.
This is absolutely devasting for a seeker!
My son is the same as the table. My partner appears the same as the filing cabinet. Dog shit is the same as a salad - but I wouldn’t eat it.
The fact that I can tell the difference between things means that my conditioning exists by which I can function. For example, when I walk into the bathroom, I know to pee in the toilet and not the sink. Although I have peed in the sink during my teenage years.
When I refer back to memories of a self, it is clear also that, although it appeared to operate as a separate individual, this was simply just the One divided into two: subject and object, but I don’t have any qualifier for what the One is, and I certainly don’t mean Oneness - absolutely not!
As you can probably gather, using language to describe this is very problematic. It causes all sorts of issues, particualry in the various traditons. A word can only refer to more words, but this cannot be contained within a word - its too restrictive. It cannot even be contained within a structure like the fetters. This makes the fetters obsolete from the outset; a complete and total lie - but for the moment, its the best I can do with words.
One could say it is unconditioned, or unborn, because there are no objects of knowledge that can define it.
It doesn’t have a shape, a colour, a context, a smell; it doesn’t have any spatial dimensions like length, breath, width, and it has no sense that time is passing by, yet it does not exclude the physical reality - all things seemingly appear as
